So my LCS has this morgan for $40 (that's what one of the workers priced it at for me, and he may be able to go down to 35 at the lowest or we do a combo deal) You tell me, VAM variety & grade. He didn't think it was cleaned and I looked at it really close and saw some scratches in the fields but other than that looks good. Should I buy it @ 35-40$, and what is it worth?

Better lighting hopefully on this one, I know not the greatest pics because the lighting in my LCS is all weird.

I think $35 is a fair price. It is always very tough to photograph Morgans that are PL or DMPL. But from the photos presented, other than a nice cameo on the reverse, it doesn't appear that this coin would make Proof Like.

Well, if you're comfortable with the surfaces (dirty little secret - all the images in the world don't absolve you of responsibility for the decision ), buy every one of those you can at $35. Even if it's a high AU example, 1880-S is among the best Morgans have to offer and this one's a good example. I'm unsure if the obverse reaches PL but the reverse looks excellent and the coin as a whole shows off well. All day at $35, understanding it's cheap because it's common in that condition.

The obverse die looks like it has several strikes on it beyond PL but the reverse is outstanding. At 35-40$ - buy, buy, bye. VAM? Unfortunately, there is no way to attribute from the photos you supplied.

It is hard to put a value on a coin until a grade can be assigned. I could not tell the grade from your photos as the coin could go anywhere from AU 58 to MS 63. The coin has nice eye appeal and will have market appeal for the grade.

If you like it, buy it, and the value is irrelevant.
If you don't like it, and have to justify its purchase on the value, why buy it? Save your money and buy a coin that you like.
Personally, I think it's a nice, original toned Morgan with character and luster and not much PL going on. The reverse is outstanding. I'd not have any qualms about owning it.
If you're still on the fence after this, take the worst grade you think it'll make, and bid 1-2 grades lower (not a big deal on common-date Morgans.)
If you end up buying it on that offer, even if you end up not liking the coin, you should still be able to resell it for your investment, no harm, no foul.
