I recently came across a handful of example from this series and was quite surprised as to the value and scarcity of availability of these coin... The 1933-1935 have fairly high mintages but are valued (and selling) for strong prices... Does anyone have any theories to this? Were there many pieces recalled or something?

There were many currency reforms in the Soviet ruble. Although coin sizes were the same for most coins during the whole soviet era, the currency was revalued three times if I'm correct. First in the 1920's, then again in the 1940's (post-war) and again in 1961.

Because money was scarce, I assume most people spent/redeemed whatever they could find?

I have noticed that the 1946 coins are tough to find in unc condition. The ones I come across are indeed pricy.
