Alright, another 1878 S. I'd love to be more of a contributor here than an asker, but it's not working out that way. After the last one, I was determined to figure this one out, but after more than an hour staring at pictures, I just can't get it. The problem is the wing doesn't appear to be engraved. If it was engraved, it might fit any number, but to these eyes, it doesn't look right. Here's what I've noticed: Doubled LIBERTY Broken 4th Star Complete r in trust doubled B Doubled D over-polished Hair MD in PL Probably more, but anyway, without the engraved wing feather, it just doesn't match up. Perhaps the way the die is over-polished is concealing the wing engraving? Or maybe I'm just looking at the wrong things in the wing. Anyway, I surrender to thine might and ask assistance!

This is way out of my field, but I saw some similarities with VAMs 67 & 78. Possibly a close up shot of the eagles lower right wing feathers would help. Good luck, and be patient, the experts will arrive shortly.

I'll check those out!
These are photographs on my server; if you click on them they enlarge.
THANKS for your help! I sure appreciate it! Will report back on 67 and 78.

Alright, did some checking.
Unfortunately, can't be 67. The S isn't far enough to the left. The left edge on the question coin aligns with the right edge of the curve of D.
I didn't see any of the markings for any of the 5 dies for 78. Not saying it couldn't be that, but I don't see any indications that it is.
Thank you for your help. I'll keep trying!

Check out the VAM-17 series -- maybe a 17, 17A, 17B, or 17C.

LewFR, thanks!
Good idea! I think I checked all those for the toned coin and forgot to for this one. Will report back!
Update - 17C is looking pretty good from the photos, thanks LewFR! Can't believe I missed that one when I started on this coin. Sheesh. A second set of eyes is great help. I'll pull the coin out in the morning and verify.
Nother one: couldn't wait. VAM-17. I think what happened... Of course, I looked at the first picture under the listing of the polish lines under the tail feather and ignored the caption that said those polish lines were rare. Those are not on my coin, but she's a 17. Ha! THANK YOU LewFR!

I don't want to be a spoiler but VAM 17 does not have doubled LIBERTY.

To ask a real dumb question how do VAM's affect price and is there a book that deals just with VAM's? I have seen the ultra expensive book on Morgans, but does it price all the VAM's? I have 5 Morgans common date average MS63. My plan was to collect the common dates in at least MS63, but now VAM's complicate my plans to the Nth degree.

It is most certainly a VAM 17 or Sub-VAM. The Obverse die marker of the tiny chips from eyelid to bridge of nose are very clear in the pictures. Lewis called it. Like all II1 Obverse dies, there is no significant doubling. There is slight doubling on the V17. I have a few on my desk and just checked. LVA must not have seen enough doubling to list it as something other than a II1 Obverse Die. The listing was revised last year and he has seen the V17s many times with all the other subs As far as value. V17s are common and priced accordingly.
