Hello, A local auction house has this 1864 cent coin for sale. The auction house doesn't state it as a 1864L but to me it looks like it is. What do you think of it? Photo's are from the auctionhouse's website Edited by canary01 07/25/2015 06:41 am

I think I can see the L, and look at the 1 in the date, it looks doubled.

@edweather, I didnt notice that doubling before, thanks! Do you think that adds to the value?

It is probably an RPD and would add some value depending on which Snow variety it is. Good Luck!!

This almost looks like an S3, but the date position is slightly different. In the S3, the tip of the flag on the '1' does not extend beyond the end of the pointed bust. Your coin does just slightly. I could not find any other matches in Snow's attribution guide. So either it could be a newer variety that is not in my guide or one that has not yet been attributed. If no one else can find a matching Snow number it may be worth sending your coin to Snow.

It almost has to be S-3. There is no 64-Plain with a date positioned or doubled like that, and no other 64-L with similar positioning and doubling either. Maybe just lighting?

Coinfrog, you could be right. It does closely match the S3. But if it was my coin, once I got it in hand, I would definitely take a second look and compare it to an S3.

The problem is trying to see the clear relationship between the flag of the numeral 1 and the point of the bust, I think. I mean, a lot of '64-Ls have this sort of doubling, and the S-3 is very cool but is not worth a big premium. I would love to see a sharper close-up from the same distance with no side lighting.

Looks like S3 to me. I would let Rick examine it regardless. Where is the auction house located?

Well, if it's not a match, then we have something pretty unusual here. Anybody have any other possible matches?

It's certainly a match to S-3. The picture is just rotated more clockwise than the picture in the Snow guide. Date position relative to the denticles also lines up fine.
