1999 P Nickel Doubled Die Obverse?

Looks like machine damage during the strike damaging those devices. Note the date the first 9 is reduced more than the other devices. MD

This is a typical example of Die Deterioration Doubling for that year. I wrote about it in November 1999 here:

Many examples are extreme with a lot of flatness as seen on your coin.

How can deterioration be the cause when I have a 1999 p fs and there is definetly doubling

The biggest difference between Machine Doubling and a doubled die is the size of the devices. On a MD example, the devices are reduced in size. On a doubled die the devices are enlarged.

So the devices will fit into the three the ranges. Normal, reduced or enlarged. Reduction is an event that the machine causes after a strike. (whether normal or a doubled die) On a doubled die, the doubling is on the die and enlarges the size of the devices. On this example the devices are normal size, with a reduction of MD. So it is not a doubled die.
