Never had any of my coins graded by anyone. I see many people talk about several grading companies but I don't know how it all works.

Do I need to send the coin in and envelope in a 2x2?
Do all companies slab the coin?
Is grading worth the time?
How long does it take to receive my coin back?
Are the services free? (https://goccf.com/t/236360) mentioned free submit ion in December.
If I didn't ask something important, please tell.

Thank you in advance.
Rest in Peace

TPG = Third Party Grading.

There are several companies that grade coins. The two most prominent are PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation): http://www.ngccoin.com/

There are two other TPG's which are accepted, but are not as preferred as the above two. They are ANACS: http://www.anacs.com/Default.aspx?A...kieSupport=1

and ICG: (Independent Coin Grading) http://www.icgcoin.com/

The main reason PCGS and NGC are preferred is that they are USUALLY (but not always) very consistent in their grading.

PCGS offers a fine Photo Grade system here: http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/

There are other besides these four, but they are almost all considered "basement slabbers" which simply means that their grading is oftentimes rated much higher than the coins actually are for the profit of that slabber.

Read the information on submitting coins to PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG, and you should have all of your questions answered, I believe.

"Do I need to send the coin in and envelope in a 2x2?"

The TPGs will tell you how to ship your coins on their website. I think it is usually labeled "how to submit" or something similar.

"How long does it take to receive my coin back?"

They structure their grading in tiers usually based on coin value and turnaround time. Their "Services and Fees" page usually has how much each tier costs and the estimated turnaround time.

The reason I have coins graded to set a value on the coin when it becomes time to sell, and coins that are in a holder will typical sell for more money.

If the coin value is $50, and it cost $30 to have the coin graded, then, it is not worth the time or money to have the coin graded. You need to set a coin value where it is worth your time and money to submit.

One of the values I found on submitting coins to be graded was feedback on my grading and buying skills.

Well, I don't have any valuable coins (yet) that worth grading anyways. Just some food for thoughts.

Ngc & pcgs cost around $150 for membership but you get that $$ back in free grading. Anacs requires no membership and is cheaper than the top 2 bUT is not quite as respected. Icg mentioned above should be avoided. It adds nothing to resale and even can detract. They aren't a "basement" company but they aren't widely trusted in the industry like the top 3. But they are considered #4. If you just want a cheap way to seal a coin in a slab then they are fine but anacs is better anyway at a similar cost.

Also, it should be noted that anacs is THE go to for morgan and peace VAM because they have one of the best in the business heading the department and will ID & label ALL vams while pcgs & ngc only labels top list vams
