I've been wanting to learn more about the Newcomb varieties of LC's and VAM's of Morgan dollars and what not. Any good suggestions for books to read about them? and pretty much any book that is in depth on varieties.

I know the Newcomb book is pretty good. But it is incomplete as new varieties have surfaced since then.

The Holmes catalogs from Goldberg Auction Galleries are excellent, my favorite auction catalog is still Heritage Auction's Walter J. Husak Large Cent catalog, the photos aren't as good as Goldberg's Holmes Collection, they are bit greenish and dark, but Mark Borckardt has outdone all other catalogs to date with the description and background information, a real tour-de-force. Get the independent Husak catalog, though you can find the lots in the full Feb. 15, 2008 Long Beach catalog from Heritage, the stand alone catalog #460 is what you want. Here is the information on it, though I wouldn't pay the asking price from the Amazon dealers, they are regularly found for around $50-75.00 http://www.amazon.com/Heritage-Auct...p/1599672146 You can also use Heritage auction archives to limit searches for the Husak collection of large cents online. For books John D. Wright's "The Cent Book" is probably better than any Newcomb book at about $100-125.00, as are the Bill Noyes books if you have deep pockets ($200+). Meadowview already gave you the link I did on my previous list of VAM books, though hardly complete, it should keep you going for a long while. Thanks Meadowview!

Heads up, I hate digital books. I'd rather physically hold a book in my hand and read it in a library.

But when the book you want is out of print you may have many months of waiting before a chance to buy comes along, The Breen Large Cent book was that way for me, so the digital version was nice to have, plus you can always use it to quickly find items with a search that you can't in a physical book. Tom Deck has a nice site with most all of Walter's large cents imaged before they were slabbed by PCGS, and permission to post them; http://www.largecents.net/husak/index.htmlTom's own personal collection is also on his site and a good reference. His collection goes later into the Newcombs, while walter stopped at 1814.

And some people prefer typewriters. (Not me. I have been using digital word processing since 1983.)

There are few issues left where attribution is impossible online, and information is being made accessible via the Internet as fast as people can get it up there. The only book I ever use for attribution these days is Overton, and only early copper is a challenge to attribute via exclusively online resources. I have no real difficulty attributing any other US issue online.
The day of the reference treeware book in numismatics is over.

Very helpful information. I've been trying to get by with the Newcomb/Clapp edition for 1816-1857 large cents, and even though I have no problem discerning varieties, that book is sometimes very time consuming to use. I have a few more books to put on my want list - YEAH!
