Actually, the mint has given NGC the first 2000 coins. That way they can start the grading faster. Your coin goes to the end of the line, but they give you the coin already slabbed from the front of the line.
Then when the 1st release period ends (or the rush tails off), they will slab the whole 2000 as PF70s and sell them to MCM and the like.
Saves all the confusion at NGC's office this way.
(OK, I'm joking, but I had some of you going... admit it)

So they aren't requiring the mint packaging this time? Saves me $3.

Isn't this a default no brainer since the coin and medal are only available in this set? And with a 17K mintage limit each shouldn't there only be 1 die pair each? So the only true HONEST numismatic designation should be early die state, mid die state, and late dies state based on strike quality and die polishing marks.

Quote: And with a 17K mintage limit each shouldn't there only be 1 die pair each? No proof (and I would assume reverse proofs) have much lower die life. Typically a proof die has a maximum life of about 3,000 coins. It would not surprise me for the fields of the reverse proof to lose their "frost" faster so they may have even lower life. I would guess between eight and fifteen die pairs for the dollar coin.
