I just noticed this one floating around on ebay, and being an American I've never seen this coin before. The reverse design is quite similar to the reverse designs of US Large Cents.

Is there any relevance with Americans and Southeast Asia circa 1845?

No link whatsoever to America. Pure British Empire in the good old days when we ruled the world.

Just a regular issue coin from the time. Not at all connected to the USA during that time time period. The U.S. Was little more than a mouse on the world stage back then, hardly the super power of today.

Words and a wreath are the single most common coin design of the 19th and earlier 20th centuries, and there's only so many ways to put those two elements together.

It's the first issue for the Straits Settlements, British Singapore, by the East India Company. It replaced the Indian Rupee, in order to facilitate trade. Southeast Asia, in the Chinese economic sphere, used the Mexican and Spanish Peso, divided into 100 centavos or cents. I believe they were minted in Bombay.

American traders relied heavily on Spanish and Mexican silver.
