Ok guys, this girl was at Johns for a while and he wanted me to send it to Leroy a few months ago after he researched it a little more but in the process he found one in better grade to send have sent to him needless to say I was a little disappointed as I thought I finally would be admitted into the discovery club but oh well & I get it but what are the freakin odds he'd find a better one around the same time

At least we have another to add to the repository

Here's what messy said:

"The clash is hard to see on the O/CC, but it is there. The 1880 I looked at some more and found a match with the VAM 70 obverse. I had found the same thing on someone else's coin (in higher grade) back in March and had him send it to Leroy to be listed as VAM 70, Die 2, as it had a different reverse. You coin matches the "die 2" reverse, so I call it VAM 70.2."

So you got the second. I've been that guy for a couple of VAMs.

Edit to add: Nobody thinks the speed with which two were identified has any bearing on the ultimate rarity of the die pair. If anything, interest will be stimulated and more will be found simply because they become large blips on the radar.

Die 2 certainly seems the later use of the obverse. The images over at VAMworld clearly show the die to be aged, with strong flow lines and details drawn to the rim.

SD, why was it identified as 70.2 instead of say 70a, what's the difference? And why is it an R5 if only 2 have been found, wouldn't that be a higher rarity? Or is it just an unadjusted rating crossover from the 70?

70.2 is indicative of a second die pair associated with a designated VAM, the existence of which was not known at the time of initial designation. This isn't uncommon in VAMming, especially in view of the enormous number of potential die pairs yet to be identified. This differentiates the coin from a "sub-VAM" given the letter designation as a die state, like a heavily-clashed version. So, now that there are a 70.1 and 70.2 sharing an obverse, 70.1a and 70.2a would be entirely different reverse varieties not resembling each other.

OK. So what happens if that common obverse is then given a subvariety later?

Good question. Depends on whether the feature propagated to both uses of the die, which would be highly unlikely because then it'd be on every example. Therefore, that new feature would likely be assigned to the die pair on which it appears.
Rest in Peace

Really dave? Have you been trying or just if it happens sort of a thing.

And thanks for the clarification SD but I think you just gave me a VAM brain freeze
