I got a package of 4 coins I had sent in about 4 weeks ago and I was pretty surprised with some of the grades...
I submitted two Morgans, and 1881-S and an 1890-S, a friend of mine agreed that the 90-S was a slider and could go 58 or 63-64, and it came back 58. (I was fine with taking that risk)...
However, this 1881-S( https://goccf.com/t/234706 ) Came back as a 61... I was really shocked with this one..
That just really stunned me..
The other 2 coins I submitted were a 42/1 Mercury dime that the CCF graded as a VF and it came back as a VF30.. I was fine with that. A 1857 flying Eagle that was bought as XF came back a 50.
The 61 on the 81-S just really surprised me..
I guess rant is over

As often stated before, sending coins to ANACS is a crapshoot. They show no consistency coin-to-coin, much less over a long period of time. They charge less because their opinion is worth less - far less.

I like ANACS if I'm doing varieties. Other than that, it's about the only time I use them.

I DO look at them at shows because for the series I'm familiar with I've picked out a good number that came back better grade from NGC. Only got burned once with a 1855 3 Cent silver that ANACS had graded 62 and NGC said 55.

Oh, I definitely agree!

It is the pitiful insonsistency of ANACS slabs that leaves them ripe for the picking.

Complete irony, but that's why I always check ANACS slabs first to look for bargains.

I went back and look at the CCF comments on the 1881 S coin. The coin had some mirror fields and these coins show all bag marks and the coin in grading was most likely was docked because of the noticeable bag marks. I looked at the cheek bag marks and I could see the coin at MS62, but it does not look MS61. Sorry, I was part of the MS64 group, but I did not think the coin was PL. Grading from photo is fun, but can not replace grading the coin in hand.

Yes it was a bad surprise.. I agree that the coin is not a 65 and I don't believe it to be a 62.. I was really surprised with the 61. 62 I would've said "Okay.. they were tough cause this is an easy date in MS" but I was blown away when it got a 61...
Hmm.. That's interesting moxking... I'll certainly check them out at the next show. I only submitted to ANACs because I had a coupon for two free submissions.
