It has been a collecting goal of mine for the last few years to focus on quality over quantity of purchases. Admittedly it is easier said than done.

Below are a few ways that I try to keep myself from making spur of the moment purchases:

First, for a few years my route from home from work led right past a local coin shop. Not surprisingly I found an abundance of excuses to stop in and purchase coins that I had not planned on. After 10 to 12 stops I decided to take an alternative route home so I wouldn't be tempted as much.

Second, I try to limit my purchases to the amount of cash that I have on me (allotted for hobbies) so I can't overspend and get into trouble. Unless I'm going to the coin shop I don't keep that much cash on hand so I can't be tempted.

How do you curb your hoarding tendencies? I can't be the only one that would buy every nice coin that passed them by (and was the right price) if they had the chance (and no self control).
Rest in Peace

I think limiting the cash you bring to the coin shop is an excellent idea. I have overspent on things I hadn't planned on buying simply because I could.

Coins can be like drugs....Sometimes they can be worse than drugs.

When I have spent my allocation for the month I just quit going to the local shops. Problem solved.

One possibility is to live far from any local coin shops.

I only look for good value for money purchases,
much like a woman may do with a few dollars discretionary spending money within a strict budget, out to have a bit fun with shopping therapy.

ebay is my biggest problem...too easy but I look at everything as an investment that hopefully pays dividends in the future so I'm diversifying my portfolio I guess, still it can get very carried away lol

I don't have any self control lol. I figure if I am going to be a hoarder,at least let it be coins or gold and silver. That's the only type of hoarding I condone.
Rest in Peace

E-bay and paypal used to be my biggest problem .I found myself bidding on almost anything pertaining to coins. WHY ? Because it was too darn easy. more times than not I wound up being the highest bidder.
anyways , to curb my hoarding ;I closed out e-bay and paypal. now I just buy a few coins a month from local coin shows in my area. and if there is nothing left in my budget - I simply don't go until the next show.
coin collecting can be an addiction ; but a good and rewarding one !

The biggest thing I have done to curb my hoarding is quitting coin roll hunting (CRH).

aside from the 2000 ASE I only get coins for face value, so that helps. I only hoard those normal oddities. a box of 70s pennies, working on a box of 60's, all foreign coins, and pre-1960 nickels.

I got a box of halves sitting that is almost complete and then will probably dismantle it shortly and only keep those coins that were under 20 million mintage. Only kept them because, why not, so I will be able to get another box of halves with them after spending them so it really was jsut a savings account for CRHing.

As much as I want to get into buying quality over quantity,

I am at the point where I try to purchase some quality
coins, when I can get them at a good price.

But there is no way I can stop the buying of quality, when
the price is right.

Of course, what is a quality coin can be different from
one collector to the next.

It's all simple. I only collect what I can put in an Album. No Album, I don't collect that coin.

The only loophole is getting more albums, and we know you have more than a few.

I am at that point now, do I leave the 40% halves in a coin tube, or do I buy a plain halves folder to put them in? So I guess those oddities CAUSE hoarding, especially when its as Yukon Cornelius said "Silver and Gold..."
