Nothing particularly rare here, but a nicer old Large Cent is always welcome in my house.

I haven't looked up the Newcomb variety yet, might do so later. Coin is a step or two darker than photos in hand. Reverse has a die crack straight through the M in AMER, and is rotated a bit.

NGC says: VF-25, full grade.

It's quite a bit darker than the photos indicate. If it was cleaned, it was not recently. Whoever sent it in should have at least "de-gunked" it with some acetone, NGC slabbed it as-is :(

VF details. It looks like someone tried to remove the gunk already.

VF 20 to VF25 and I agree that an acetone bath would help. Not sure about the cleaning, though. Does not seem obvious.

I have quite a few free PCGS and NGC subs. My thinking was that if I crack it out, acetone it, and resubmit, I could get a grade improvement. It's a cheap coin, so I don't have any qualms about attempting it.

I'll go VF20 as well, but not so sure it's been cleaned. Show us what you achieve with acetone and a Q-tip.

Too many red halos around the devices, especially on the obverse. imo this was cleaned back to a copper color a long time ago and has since retoned. There shouldn't be any red showing on this coin. There are a couple of nice die cracks on the reverse which should help with the attribution.
