There are two major varieties of the 1842 O-mint Seated quarter - the small-date and the large-date. The small-date is quite scarce, while the large date is fairly common. This particular coin is clearly the much less scarce large-date variety. Nevertheless, how would you grade her? An interesting detail concerning the lage date variety is that two major 'sub-varieties' of this coin are known. Just leant this today - the 'open claws' and the 'closed-claws' reverse. Please see following reference: http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/...ionalrev.htmThis reference says the open claws is quite scarce. It looks like my coin is the open claws variety - can you guys confirm what I believe I am seeing?

I'd grade this piece VF-30, and it does appear to be the "open claws" variety.

Thank you, gentlemen. VF30 it is.
Before I get too excited about this scarce variety of the 1842-O large date, I need to remind myself it appears to be very little known and fairly recent. There is only one on-line reference to it. Still, nice to have for sure. I picked this up a a local show for about 35 euros so I am double happy.

That was a good price. Open claws, very close to XF40 if not quite.

I thought it looked xf40 but I edited my reply cause everyone already had a verdict so I assumed my opinion wasn't needed.

Yes, I noticed that. Both claws are further apart than on the closed claws variety.
