Multiply by 46 holes... and it's not chump change (but still not too bad at a buck..er, jbuck). Wouldn't be the first time I've paid 4x face (or much more) for something round and shiny...
Exactly. It is not like you can get them from a mint set.

I know it. Argh! It's like wishing that dollar coins would have the date and mint mark some place on the coin that makes sense.

I share your pain there. I am only collecting them in proof (date set) since it made no sense to put P and D in an album with no know which was which!

For better or worse, I think the quality of the 'S' mint quarters are much higher than either the 'D' or 'P' quarters. I buy 2 of each state from a local dealer for 75 cents to a buck. (I haven't gotten any for a jbuck yet). I do wish they were in mint sets though.

I agree. Although billed as circulation strikes, they seem to be on par with the uncirculated mint set coins. I am sure the San Francisco mint is running their presses slower and even handling them better. The only other difference would be strike pressure, which for all we know is higher as well.

I appreciate all of the insight here. I'm going to take my time and find examples at coins shows that don't have any nicks or scratches. I'll put them in the envelopes with my mint sets because I think they should be there to begin with.
