I'll save the guessing game on the grade and just show the slab.

The point to the post is to ask if this is worth sending for an NGC crossover to try and get a 65 or a 66 out of it.

Clearly the luster is higher MS territory and the graders held back due to the reverse toning issue. There's a touch of chatter on the obverse relief but not enough to kill the luster to a 64 IMO.

I say "clearly" but of course rely on your collective opinions and outlook to gauge what I really should be contemplating.

thanks for the help

I think NGC grades Mercury dimes better then PCGS, however; that's just my opinion. I bet the toning are darker then shown in the photos, the lighting washes out the details from the focal areas.

This most likely will cross over the same grade, chance crossover to 65 is slim. IMO!

That's a nice coin, I think it has a shot at MS-65

I blew the photos up but the lighting washed the details out, so it's tough to tell with any certainty.

Is it worth the money to take a shot getting an upgrade? Is there a huge increase in price from 64 to 65.

Thanks DSF,

If your pictures is better, then we can have a better assessment. I should have stated that from the last reply.

@Imthealphaomega,

Is not worth the money from 64-FB to 65-FB, MS-66 FB definitely, will just need those clear images compare to what we have now.

I was reading my latest greysheet today & saw that a 1916-D just brought home the bacon for $94.1k (MS67FB). That's unreal money!

A toned (much more than your coin) MS68FB 1916 brought in $2.8k, that's nothing to sneeze at, either.

I think it would cross over a grade higher, depends on if the individual grader likes or dislikes toning (or if they feel it distracts or adds to eye appeal)

As a fan of toners I would be happy to own such a wonderful dime.

Killer luster. Looks like it could make 65. Need better pics. Surfaces and devices are a little blurry

bump
coin arrived
i am using a diffused lighting shot to capture detail. Combine with luster shot (sorry for the washout) and pose same question:

Any shot at a new holder or upgrade beyond 64?

thanks

I'm all about the reverse on this coin. I think that would grade at least 65 more likely 66 Imo. Obverse still tough to tell. I just cant see the cheek well enough. My best guess is the obverse is 64/65. I would say you have a decent shot at 65 but its probably just short of 66. Still a nice piece

Appears to have a small nick around Mercury jaw area? Or is that dust? Hard to tell from pictures with the glares, can't be sure that it will go higher then 65.

1916 is usually well strike, so the field is also important.

As I look carefully at all the pics, I think it is the cheek/jaw area that is holding this to a 64, not the toning (attractive).

I don't think there's enough upside here for the cost of re-submission.
