Dazed and confused because this is not just a case where I find myself surprised with a grade given by a TPG, but one in which I'm fairly blown away.

I really don't know where PCGS is coming from on this one, but maybe I'm wrong. I'd like to post some pics of the coin for your thoughts on grade, and then post the slab with the actual grade tomorrow evening (around 7 pm est) - so kind of a "You vs PCGS" thing...

Let me know if you need some more or better images, and I will try to put them up.

MS64 RD. There are a few black spots on the reverse though.

If you are surprised by the grade then I assume it's higher than you thought.

Ray , 1956 is a copper Lincoln. If it is scratched ; zinc will not show through. as far as a grade goes, I'll stick my neck way out on this one : MS-62 Damaged.

Thanks T-BOP! How stupid of me.

After seven years of collecting I theoretically knew that, but my brain must have had a glitch when I saw the silvery color... (and it is silver - just looked again through my loop - so must just be some very shiny copper in that area).

To save further embarrassment, I'm going to go ahead and delete that remark. Thanks again for catching it - and for letting me know.

Rest in Peace

I would think realistically 63RD. Even the carbon spots would have been on the coin when slabbed as it's a finger gasket.

I'm guessing that you took a close up photo at Lincoln's collar to show the big hit in clear detail, because the TPG has given a Details grade. I'm going to say that the grade on the holder is MS Details - Scratched. If this is the case, then I would strongly disagree with that grade and assessment.

If I were submitting this coin for grading, I would expect MS63RD for the low grade with hopes it would get MS64RD.

Looking forward to seeing what is on the holder.

Nice fields, a few little nicks, but I can tell the coin has blazing luster.

66RD but I'd like it better in a 65 holder due to the spots and nicks.

Head-scratcher for sure. Have no idea what you're going to surprise us with, but for me, it's 63RD at best.

Well, here it is:

PCGS-Graded-1956-D-LWC---Dazed-&-Confused---Grade-Posted

Thanks all for responding, and congratulations to those who got the 66.

Still have to say, however, that I find the grade remarkable. How does something with this many dings and nicks

PCGS-Graded-1956-D-LWC---Dazed-&-Confused---Grade-Posted

on its central device (a conservative count gives at least 8 - w/ the mark on the collar being pretty distracting, imo) merit a grade of MS66, let alone MS66+?

From the comments made its sounding like luster has a lot to do with it. The coin does have a lot of luster, but to me this is a prototypical MS63 cent (maybe MS64 on a good day). Can luster really move a grade up 3 notches?
