Hey Everybody, I've seen the 1888/7? posts in this forum and watched you guys shredding the 8/7's and I respect your knowledgeable opinions, so I want to share this one with you and get your takes on my coin. You will note its current incrustation and any advice on who to help me with restoration would be graciously accepted. This coin has been living outside for quite a long time and needs some help. I, however do not wish to pay big bucks to clean a 3 buck coin. We have tried to look at every angle, run it in photoshop using different filters, attempting to determine it's authenticity. We say it is an 1888/7. All my research seems to point to the proper attributes to be the real thing. The Cud above e in United (although encrusted still shows the outline of that mark. When I look at an angle (top to Bottom) that last eight is much higher than the other three numbers in the date, and it The nub of the 7 shows up on every pic I taken. You can see the bottom of the 7 under the 8. also on the other side of the eight is more of the seven. The last eight is not quite the same shape as the other 8's, like it's been slight contorted to cover the seven. I don't know how many pics I can upload, but here's what I've got. What do you guys think? Do your best, and pardon my dust, Work in progress

..to CCF, Treasure Shaman, enjoy your stay with us.

Nice coin if it is a 1888/7 but need bigger and close up photos of the date to be able to tell.

Larger pictures are needed to make a determination. I cannot see any of the markers around the last 8 or the remnants of the Cud at 9:00 o'clock.

The one thing that I can see is date position. If you have read earlier threads on this topic you know that date position is very important On an 1888/7, the left side of the flag on the '1' does not extend beyond the end of the bust. On your coin it appears that flag does extend slightly beyond the bust. The difference is very slight.

Based on that I would guess that it is not an 1888/7, but I would like to see better pictures before totally ruling it out.

I don't see the rim Cud that is diagnostic for this variety.
