This 1875 Seated Liberty half dollar sold for $200 on ebay. I was not the winning bidder. From the photos it looks very nice to me. The seller didn't state a grade on it

I can't see any evidence the coin was cleaned, although as a pure white coin it could have been dipped. It looks very close to Uncirculated with maybe just the slightest hint of wear of the high points of the eagle's feathers.

What grade do people think it is and do they think it is an original, uncleaned coin, or has something been done to it.

The photos are, of course, the seller's.

Thanks for your opinions and helping me as I continue to learn how to spot original vs. cleaned coins.

Nice coin that was probably dipped to remove some light toning, so....

AU details cleaned

The reverse looks more natural than the obverse.

Old saying....."If it looks too good to be true, then it probably is."

looks dipped to me and overly so...as a result it looks very dull, would not make a problem free coin in all likelihood so its worth passing on.

Agree with you both. Original coins do not look like this.

I'm an amateur, but my first thought was, "how could it be original without a single bit of color?"

I'm not necessarily in agreement that it wouldn't get into a "righteous" slab, but definitely dipped. Have to remain unconvinced by a single set of images shot under unknown conditions.

I was curious after the comments about a silver coin this old having to be toned, if original.

So, I went through the 400 most expensive Seated Liberty half dollars now listed on ebay. While not all are MS, most were MS or Proof.

There were quite a few all white proof coins, but I came up with a grand total about six business strikes that appear to be brilliant with no toning. Here are a couple of them:

Here's an 1875-CC graded MS-64 by PCGS. It's hard to tell if it's pure white or has some light purple toning due to the lighting.

An 1854 with arrows graded MS-64 by PCGS.

And an 1861 graded MS-61 by PCGS.

So, it seems that if it is untoned and mint state the chances are not great that it's original. Good lesson to remember.
