While going through my collection I started with my Dad in 1968, I came upon this 25 cent paper bill, it is dated Jan. 02, 1900. I know that the picture is bad and the bill is worn and not worth a hoot, still with this memory, my Dad still lives on.

The common name for these notes are called shin plasters... I think it refers to the soldiers using these notes to line their boots during the war.

Shinplasters were first issued in 1870 when they got there name for the reason
mentioned above and again in 1900
which is yours and finally in 1923.
Each series had there own design.

Hope you will stay with us and share the collection that you and your Dad built.
Now, your note is worth more than a "hoot"; not big $$ but certainly worth keeping--in a mylar sleeve.
Specifically it is catalog: DC-15a variety: Courtney
Reference: Canadian Government Paper Money, 27th Edition, page 152
Again, welcome aboard and visit often.

Was 25 cent notes done for just for that year, or just for ottawa? I have a quarter from earlier then that, and didnt know they have paper for under a dollar, and that late as well.

sailoranna: they're called fractional notes... and were issued from 1870 until 1923. I believe the U.S. also has some pretty nice looking fractional notes as well.

A local nintey-five year old told me recently where the term "shin plaster" came from;
For a while these were so worthless, that they were used for making casts...
Too funny.

I think these are cool, but they seem to have really shot up in value of late.
