I have been tracking ebay auction prices on silver dollars for a couple of years as that is a real area of interest for me. I have only been tracking PCGS, NGC, ICCS and the like as I can't too well judge from the pics or what people claim. I want to talk about a VG-8 ICCS graded 1947 Maple Leaf that attracted 39 bids from 7 bidders a couple of weeks ago. It went for a whopping $305 with shipping and tax. I recently saw an AU50 go for the same price. My question is why would someone pay that much for VG-8 when you can get AU for the same price if you are careful? My guess is that most of those silver dollars were uncirculated back then and the few circulated ones were soon pulled from circulation by collectors and there are so few circulated to be VG-8. Collectors looking for a set of low grade dollars just cannot easily find '47 ML in this POOR of condition and will pay dearly for it. Am I right? Would any of you do that with a particular coin? Most people want the highest quality for the best price. This is opposite. Edited by punman 11/03/2015 01:01 am

One would think you can take a EF or worst coin and tumble it to a much lower grade

Low ball collecting is great fun and many of us have a low ball dollar set. Over thirty years and mine still is not complete. Any one can buy a dollar set in Choice BU , all you have to do is write a cheque . Personally my criteria is Good 6 or worse no damage, bad rims or cleaning . Still looking for a nice 1951 and a 1948. Could improve my 1952 NWL it is too nice at VG8.

Low ball collections are kind of quirkily cool! Makes one wonder how any SDs could end up so worn......my imagination takes me to someone holding on to one, keeping it in their pocket -- "the first dollar I ever earned" -- in an era when a dollar and less was a good hourly wage and pay was most always given in cash.

punman, that example does seem odd. Was there a bidding war or something unusual about this coin?
Having said that, there are always "outliers" where people buy high or sell low. Maybe this is one of them?

Personally, I don't know why anyone would pay top dollar for a low ball coin. Kind of like buying a beaten up 1970 Mercedes and parking it in your garage just to brag about how crappy your Mercedes is. I guess we all have the right to collect what we want.

In the couple months that I've been on the forum, several of my favorite threads to read have been ones of excitement over a lowball. It's refreshing in the midst of all the stress we put into the nuances of higher grade stuff. There was a great one over if a coin could drop into PR1, as if F2 was undesirable. It was great. I've started to search the ebay for some lowballs to add to the collection just cause it's fun. As someone who appreciates the hunt and history of a coin, it's made for some pleasant laughs in a hobby that can often use a few more.

Quote: One would think you can take a EF or worst coin and tumble it to a much lower grade It would not look the same. Lowball collectors know... Quote: Personally, I don't know why anyone would pay top dollar for a low ball coin. I sold a 1948 dollar this past weekend in Montreal, ICCS graded VG-8, for $900 - to a coin dealer!! The demand is real, even more so in the US. http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/default.aspx?c=139

I like low ball coins. I've been putting together a quarter collection and it's fun. It's kind of funny to see a "fine" or "vg" coin and think, "That's not low enough for my collection."

Collcts82, I think you've summed up the interest in low balls extremely well!

Maybe someone should start a 'post your lowball, pocket silver dollar' thread!

it is very fun and hard to do, I have gotten some nice ones over extreme hunting including a 1958 which I paid well over BU prices for. to echo spp, the demand is real.
Feel free to call me Will.
