I briefly looked through the IHP varieties last night, thinking that I'd check all of my unwanted IHPs before I sell them. I'm not into error collecting at this point and any errors I find would be strictly for resale, so I don't really want to spend a lot of time searching for errors if they aren't going to hold a decent premium.

Which errors are the "good" ones?

Assuming you mostly have 1880-1909 coins, key varieties/errors to look for:

1886 T1 vs T2- look at the feathers and see if last feather is pointing to I or is between C and A. The T2 is slight more rare I believe. This is a variety, not an error

1888- look for last 8 over 7, supposedly very very rare and probably the king of the errors in Indian cents

1894: Look for doubled date

1897: Look for a 1 in the neck

For pre-1880:

1860: Point bust vs rounded bust- variety, not error

1864: Copper nickel vs Bronze. For the Bronze, there are two varieties: 64 and 64L. The 64L is much more rare. If you can't see the L (have to turn coin 90 degrees at back of the head where the ribbon is), you can tell the difference between the no L vs L by the bust- 64L has pointed bust, 64 has rounded bust. The three major 64s are varieties, not errors.

The other thing to look for on the 64s is doubled dated. I have a couple in my collection

1865: the 5 can be plain or fancy- variety, not error

1869: 69/69 doubled date. This one is tough and is often missing in complete colelctions sold on ebay.

1873: closed 3 vs open 3- variety not an error; also doubled "Liberty" (very rare, in part because most 1873 are worn down too far to even see "Liberty")

There are many minor varieties/errors, but I don't have enough knowledge on those.

Thank you SO much. My IHPs range from 1880 to 1909, so you've narrowed it down well for me. Kurt gave me some links to ALL the varieties/errors, but I think it's more effort than I want to put in to look for everything. I have about 110 IHPs to go through, so this will cut the work considerably for me.

Hi, and I'm glad my links were of some help. And, for the record, I just started studying/collecting IHP. From the little I know, to cover all the varieties, there would be a lot of detail that would practically involve writing a book! However, there are good books out there already, such as Fivaz/Stanton's "Cherrypicker's Guide", or Rick Snow's attribution guides. Additionally, I can add some valuable die varieties to the list above, such as the 1865 DDR, the 1867/67 RPD, 1887 DDO, 1870 Snow-8 (valuable: I found copy #10!), 1873/73 RPD, 1890 QDO (quadruple die), 1888/888 Snow-2 RPD (valuable!), 1894/94 to name a few! So...I might be interested in buying those IHC from you, email me.

Okay varieties, die varieties, and errors are all completely different things. The terms are not interchangeable. Varieties would be the rounded bust, pointed bust...shallow N, not shallow N...stuff like that...design elements that were changed on purpose.

Die varieties are the doubled dies, repunched dates, etc. Doubling in the design on the die that was not intended, but happened anyway.

Errors are the same thing no matter what the coin series - clips, indents, brockages, wrong planchet, split planchet, double strike, etc.

Please make note of this and try to learn it - speaking in like terms certainly helps when trying to get help, buy or sell such coins. Using the wrong term adds confusion and vaguety that are unnecessary.
