AU? How?

I see an XF40 coin.

I think its MS62. If its AU58 its due to color and I think that would be a shame because this coin is not "Almost Un-Circulated".

The dark toning is the reason grades are all over the place.

Must be something I can't see under the toning. I'm far from an expert in LSC, I just don't see much AU detail on the obverse. Looking at elbow, chest, hair, cap..on reverse, tops of wings, bottom of left wing, claw at arrows... but dsfreeworld knows his stuff when it comes to the series...

This will be a good learning experience for sure.

I love the coin, I just have no idea how to grade it.

Please, no. I don't. I know a little bit about the dimes but that's where it stops.

I don't see any wear unless the toning is truly fooling my eyes.

What you're seeing for "wear" could very well be weak San Francisco Mint strike.

I see rub on the obverse high points and in the fields. The reverse shows less evidence of circulation and stronger remaining luster. Toning appears original.

AU-53 seems about right overall.
