. Hello again..

I found a 1983D definitely doubled ear,
possibly doubled die penny. Is this the
real doubled die? Would really appreciate
any help.

The third picture below is that of the ear.
I hope the pictures are clear enough

SA, I'm afraid the ear is MD. If you don't mind my saying, I think you could benefit from the photography section. If not, you should at least experiment with your lighting. Good pictures are paramount here. A lot of people are hesitant to comment on a coin unless they can see it clearly. It's hard to differentiate between the glare and what's actually on the coin with these pictures. Photography is 90% lighting.

I would say from these pictures it looks to be a plating issue for the mint mark and devices. I can't tell what's going on with the ear due to picture quality. My guess is it looks like it took a hit just above the bottom of ear

Yes it could be a hit or maybe MD. Hard to tell with the pics. Either way it's not a doubled die ear. I must confess I was going by the date.

Thank you CoinMasters and tweak800.
I will work on getting better pictures-that's
one of my daily challenges. lol. I did have another
picture from a different angel of the ear that
may be more helpful. I had tried comparing
this 1983D to the 1983-d 1cent WDDO-002
I was looking at online. The ear stood right out
with me which surprised me cause I thought
the double ear was on another date. I will work
on getting other pictures, hopefully will be clearer, but
below is another picture of the ear I took that may be helpful.

I took a few pictures in hopes it helps
see what might be going on. I had come
across another 1983 D penny and used
that in comparison to the other 1983d penny
which is confusing about the ear. The first picture
is the other 1993 D penny which looks like
a normal ear, then the next picture is of the
ear I posted earlier. I may be wrong about
it being a doubled ear, but there looks like something
Is there. I posted some other pictures (mostly of
the back) which seems to me to look more doubled
then the front. I hope to hear what everyone might
think. I would really appreciate it.

One other thing, I also noticed with the two 1983 d pennies
I have here both look a different color than the other
one and the other one with the normal ear
doesn't appear doubled like the 1983 d in question.
Maybe someone can tell me what I might not be
seeing.

Perfect that first picture, you posted second if that makes sense , sho it was a hit. Normal looking ear with a small contact mark just above the earlobe. No worries just keep looking at posts and looking through change I swear it will hit you fast when you all the sudden can recognize almost everything you see. That and you will see everything on this forum over and over so you get good at being able to diagnose most coins.

Just regular dies. Not a doubled die on either side. Machine Doubling often affects both sides of the coin. Mild to strong, depending on how loose the machine is. To us it seem obvious. But to the machine is it really slight. So Machine Doubling can vary in strength even different from one strike to another:
1983-D-Doubled-Ear-Possibly-Doubled-Die-Penny?
Note how the affected areas can be different from strike to strike with the same dies and the same machine. (Note the die marker is visible on each coin on this illustration?)
So while it looks like something, the devices are not showing spread on them That is the different between a normal die and a doubled die. (the die die doubled on a doubled die coin)

Seeing images side by side help us to see what is normal and what is showing spread on the devices.
