The-Gop-Debates-The-New-$10American Numismatic Society - The ongoing discussion about changing the personages who grace US currency is one that we have covered before (here, here, and here). This spring, the Women on 20s movement effectively sparked a renewed national discussion about the lack of women on US currency (beyond of course the lightly-circulated Sacagawea dollar coin). Although the goal of that campaign was to replace Andrew Jackson on the twenty-dollar bill, in June Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew made a surprise announcement that the ten-dollar bill, which was already in the process of being redesigned, would feature a woman. The rather general message was simply that a "notable woman" would feature on the bill and the American public was asked to share its ideas about who it might be here. Despite this solicitation for public feedback, the decision will ultimately be made by Jack Lew and opposition to removing Alexander Hamilton at this point seems moot.

The tremendous response to the announcement and discussions about the varied possibilities have been ongoing. The winner of the popular Women on 20's poll was Harriet Tubman, with Eleanor Roosevelt coming in a close second. The poll we ran here on Pocket Change was won by Amelia Earhart, with Helen Keller just behind. Anecdotally, the name I have most often heard is Rosa Parks. In short, it seems like there are a number of different possibilities and it has been heartening to see this numismatic issue enliven the public interest. It was also fascinating to see it addressed at last night's GOP debate on CNN. Although moderator Jake Tapper condescendingly introduced it is a "lighthearted" topic, he asked the Republican candidates directly: "What woman would you like to see on the $10 bill?"

Very interesting to see the candidates discuss this. I was very intrigued by the answers, especially that of Governor Christie.

Quote:
"I think the Adams family has been shorted in the currency business. Our country wouldn't be here without John Adams, and he would not have been able to do it without Abigail Adams, so, I'd put Abigail Adams on the bill."
I like that.

Very interesting.

I thought I read somewhere that a woman wouuld only appear on half of the new $10s, and that Hamilton would remain on the other half - ie, two different $10s would be issued at the same time.

Any truth to this?

That would be completely ignorant and counter-productive.

I cannot understand your anger - I was just asking a question which I have heard from others.

Why is my question ignorant?

Australia has people on the front and the back. We should be able to do the same.

@CoinFrog: I don't think jbuck was calling you ignorant, rather the prospect of having 2 10-dollar bill designs.

But I've read that as well:

No, sorry, your question was not ignorant.

That the government would issue two concurrent designs is ignorant. Did they not learn anything from the dollar coin?

We are governed by idiots.

Get rid of Hamilton. Get rid of the cent. Get rid of the one dollar note. Stop being so darn stupid.

Hey jbuck -

You seem to like John and Abigail Adams, but if memory serves, you're not a big Hamilton fan.

Why not? Weren't they both Federalists?

(luv you)

We touched on that here.

I am not a hater, at least a hater of people; ideas are a different story. I do not hate Hamilton. I do not hate Obama or Bush. Like them? That, too, is a different story, but any dislike would be for their ideas alone.

Hate. Strong that feeling is. Consume you it will.

As for Adams, I really admire him. Caught in the middle, it seems. He and Jefferson where close and Jefferson had no love for Hamilton (nor hate, I would hope). Just different ideas.

So, back to the topic. If you are going to honour someone, especially a woman, you do not do it by putting them along side someone else. Everyone else on our coins have stood alone. We let Sacagawea stand alone for seven years, but then we made her stand next to more dead presidents.
