I'm not exactly known for my "standard" method of collecting Classics, so why should this one be any different? After falling in love with the Liberty Head golds I settled in on the Half Eagles. They (and the Quarter Eagles) appear to have the most (different) Mint Marks of any U.S. minted coin; so, of course, that was the leverage I needed to go after them. As a kicker, there are also the "No Motto" and "Motto" varieties which ending up giving me a total of ten different coins. I'm afraid my Carson City Dollar Set took a big hit, but so be it. Without further adieu, let me share the "Paleoguy Half Eagles" on parade: 1847/47-P Gold Half Eagle (ex. Bass), PCGS AU-50: 1849-C Gold Half Eagle, PCGS AU-55: 1853-D Gold Half Eagle (Large D), PCGS AU-53: 1840-O Gold Half Eagle (Broad Mill), ANACS AU(Det.): 1857-S Gold Half Eagle, PCGS VF-35: 1882-P Gold Half Eagle w/Motto, PCGS MS-61: 1893-CC Gold Half Eagle w/Motto, PCGS AU-50: 1906-D Gold Half Eagle w/Motto, PCGS MS-61: 1893-O Gold Half Eagle w/Motto, PCGS MS-61: 1892-S Gold Half Eagle w/Motto, PCGS MS-62:

@CoinFrog.. The grades and given in the lead in for each coin before the photos..
Thanks Dave. I like the 1840-O Broad Mill a lot too. It's in an old ANACS holder and they weren't very kind with the "details" grade. Going to crack it out and send it PCGS for grading. Only thing, PCGS doesn't attribute the Broad Mill variety and it's kinda special. PG

I didn't even see that it's a broad mill. Now that is truly impressive. Any idea what the survival pop is?

Thanks for the very informative link Meadow... That is total mintage of the variety, but Dave and I were wondering what the survival numbers of these might be. PG

From searching the Heritage Auctions looks like 2009 was the last time they auctioned one. PG

Very nice set, may I ask how long it took you to complete and how you found them (coin show, dealers, online)?
