I'm sorry if this comes across as a very dumb question but I'm new to using ebay and am wondering how it works. I think I get the whole bidding thing so I'm alright there. But I just placed a bid on an item and was instantly outbid. Obviously, I upped my bid a little (it was way underpriced anyway) and was outbid again. I gave up on that coin and tried another - just for the sake of experimentation - and the same thing happened again.

So what's going on here?

I've also been following the thread on sniping and was wondering how/where you would set up software to do this. Thanks for any advice!

When you put a bid in, ebay will only show the rest of the world the portion of your bid that puts you on the top. ebay keeps the rest of your bid secret.

So if there was someone that bid say $100 but was winning the auction at $50, then you bid $75, the previous bidders bid is automatically upped to beat your by ebay's proxy system. It's instant.

Hope I explained that well enough.

Sniping would not help in a situation where you are bidding below someone's max bid. I always set a max bid at least a little over the next bid increment so I don't get sniped.
