I like these coins and as I understand it they often get turned in for melt value and unless rescued end up at the melters. Anyone have thoughts on if enough of these have been melted and is there a chance that down the road the coin will pick up some numismatic value? Thanks - my 1st official day on the forum

Too many minted, not all with cameos. If you have a nice Ultra Cameo, or a SP67 or higher, then maybe.....So not all of these 1967 $20 were 'created' equally but remain one of Canada's nicest looking coins.

By far this is one of the nicest gold coins Canada has put out in my opinion. As stated earlier an ultra cameo would be a bit of a "sleeper" right now... but just the regular coin... nadda.
But if the price was right I don't think I would ever turn one of these coins down.. they're just too nice!
By the way.. welcome to the forum!

Rather uninspired really. A 50c piece in gold. Why wasn't there another Colville on that?

Thanks! I have one that I have been told is a heavy cameo - but comparing to another I can't see a huge difference, which I attribute to my lack of knowledge on what exactly to look for.

On the left of this web site there's a tool bar... great information can be found there including this in the glossary: Quote: Cameo The term applied to coins, usually Proofs and prooflike coins, that have frosted devices and lettering that contrast with the fields. When this is deep the coins are said to be "black and white" cameos. Occasionally frosty coins have "cameo" devices though they obviously do not contrast as dramatically with the fields as the cameo devices of Proofs do. Specifically applied by PCGS to those 1950 and later Proofs that meet cameo standards (CAM).

Handsome looking coin, but they made too many.

Perhaps. Spoke with a fellow at a coin show - his opinion was that about half of these coins have gone in to melters over the years . . . I guess we'll never know for sure.

Remember that for $35 the whole set in that nice white satin and black leather box was mailed to us(me)way back then. Mine was dropped off by Canada Post and placed between the screen door and the main door because no one was there.. I still sent a few of them to melt for ~$750 or $850 a pop when the gold price recently went crazy.. ..also,..I had not seen or joined this wonderful CCF site at that time..and as perfect as they were and heavy cameos galore,..no dealer was offering more than melt..

Just snagged one of these at an auction tonight(online) - not in hand yet so don't know how clean it is - get it for less than melt :)

I would like to buy one of these to re-complete the set I have ~ but so far I can't justify the expense...

Was thinking about posting an image of the coin I got but realized that the way I light it very much affects how it looks. I would say it may have a slight bit of heavy cameo - unforetuantly there are some fine scratches as well. Looks like the previous owner did not handle the coin with the best of care. Not that I mind too much at the price I picked it up at.

It's a bullion coin not a numismatic coin. I just about bought one for ~$900 that was ICCS SP-67 ultra heavy cameo, but in the end I couldn't justify the premium. I probably should have bought it, since melt is about $791 CAD on these at the moment.

"Uninspired" or not, this coin design had ought to be more prevalent. Ditch the monarch and return to the Canadian coat of arms as the obverse. I think it looks elegant and official-looking this way.
