I don't usually speak ill of dealers, but in this case I'll make an exception. To avoid any possible libel, I'll just report the facts below. Lacking a better place to report this, here goes.

Yesterday I re-visited a dealer since I was in the area. The last time I was there, they tried to pass off a group of key Canadian cents as "MS Red" when in fact they were obviously whizzed...hairlines everywhere! They did not disclose this to me--I found out on my own.

Giving them one last chance, I went through their Indian cents (to cherry-pick of course). During my visit, the guy there discussed their $100K/day volume in gold coins, and had a couple buyers who got all his attention (well, no surprise there). I overheard what amounted to a sales pitch packaged as investment advice, which struck me as flawed at best (in my opinion).

Then, a man stepped in with a gold coin which had a few marks on the obverse. He wondered if/how these marks could be removed, to which the owner said (I kid you not) "burn them off with a propane torch" (!)

Then, when it was my time to buy my items, I found I was low on cash (and they don't take credit). Rather than just let the .75 slide, this guy browbeated me on why I don't carry more currency? Sigh...if you do $100K/day in gold, what does a few cents matter?!

I learned my lesson yesterday, and wanted to spare you a similar experience.

This shop is in Palo Alto, CA near Stanford U. It has "broker" in the name.

I've had similar experiences here in the North Bay but have managed to find a couple shops that are OK. Feel free to PM me if you want details - or if you would like to borrow my propane torch to take off those hairlines.

The local department store might do more than 100K/day.
Would they let .75 slide if you were short? If you bought $1000.00 worth of coins, he probably should've let you slide. How much did your purchases total?

As for the rest of the stuff in your post, thanks for the warning.

Oh right, and for any purchases less than that, kick the deadbeat out!

What got me was the attitude...that's no way to keep a customer. I came up short once before with no-credit card dealer, and that dealer just said "mail me the difference." Good dealer vs. lousy dealer. Guess who gets return business?

I know exactly who you're talking about! I've only looked at PCGS coins there, but I did note that he tends to be overpriced and will not budge. I always figured that was fine and it works for him. He has HUGE inventory and he's in an expensive location, so it probably suits those with willing to spend more for convenience.

I have always noted the lack of friendliness there.

Since you're in the area here are two dealers I HIGHLY recommend. Treasure Island in Palo Alto (on El Camino), and Mac's Coins in Sunnyvale (off Mathilda near the train station). Mac's coins is (408) 732-8575.

There you will find fair prices, exceptional service and above all HONESTY. If you visit either please let them know "Sean the Army guy" referred you. I get nothing out of it except satisfaction of helping good dealers.

Thanks...I know Dale, very cool guy, he lets me look through his Canadian coins for rare stuff. He'd rather I find it than some dealer he wholesales to.
