I have a full red early Lincoln that currently resides in an older NGC MS-65 Red holder. Part of the reverse label on the holder has been ripped off. Were I to resubmit the coin to have it put in a new NGC holder would I receive the same grade as the old holder or do they regrade it?
Point is, I like the MS-65 Red grade and don't want to risk losing it. Paul Bulgerin

Pcgs and ngc guarantee their grades. It will come back the same or higher I believe but the real question is if it has gone to RB would they still give it full red?

Reholder is different than regrade. It's depends on the submission option you choose and $ you pay.

I recently submitted reholder coins to both NGC & PCGS, and the coins came back the same grade as their is no grading. It took NGC about a week to reholder the coins after arrival. The new holders made a big difference in the coin appearance as the old holders were very scratched.

Correct, grade will be the same in a re-holder situation.

In general a coin sent in for reholder will come back with the same grade ad serial number. I say I general because they WILL do a quick look to make sure there isn't a obvious disconnect between the grade and the coin. Say the coin is clearly an AU that slipped through and was graded MS-63. It would be down graded and they would pay compensation under the grade guarantee. Or if you RD coin has tuned in the holder and is now a BN coin they will NOT reholder it as a RD (They don't want obvious grade errors going out if they can avoid it.) ad they will not compensate you because their guarantee does not cover coins that "turn" or change condition in the holder after slabbing.
So if your MS-65 RD is no longer RD, sending it in for a reholdering holds a good chance of the color designation changing.

If it's in an old NGC "fattie" holder then keep it as-is because there is some cache to the old holders. Torn or damaged holograms are very common and cause no loss of value to most buyers. Now if the holder itself is damaged or you can't stand the hologram issue go ahead but be sure it's fully Red as you say and Conder101 noted.

Thanks for the opinions. The coin is in an older NGC slab. I think I'll leave it as is since the missing part of hologram isn't that big an issue. That was good to hear.
I know it's "Buy the coin and not the slab", but the slab is something that is taken into consideration at times.

Heck, if it were a morgan or Peace dollar you could get a vss attribution sticker that is put right over the hologram. Haven't seen any companies do the same with lincolns though for varieties and such
