Hi there, been away from collecting for a while but I need help on this one, have a chance to purchase this, the fella said it is magnetic, like the 1943 pennies,I've seen many corroded silver coins before but this actually does look like a 43 penny planchet by the way the silver color is peeling, silver coins don't peel off the top layer when they corrode. Thought I'd get some input on it here, thanks everybody.

It's a fake.
If this was a quarter struck on a 1943 steel planchet, the coin would be much smaller, with the devices around the rim not appearing.
The dates also an issue - a 1942 quarter struck on a 1943 planchet?
Lastly, 1943 steel cent planchets, like silver quarters, wouldn't peel to reveal what looks like copper.
Frankly, it looks like a fake 1942 quarter made on iron. Not worth even the quarter dollar it says it is.

If it were a steel cent planchet the rims would not be in place and the rim devices would be cut off or missing all together. Unless maybe you're thinking that quarter planchet were cut from steel cent stock?

Cascade, assuming this may have happened (1 year prior to the steel pennies) you would think that by now this would have been a known rare coin, like the 44 steel penny, or the 43 copper penny.
what is the weight of the coin? this is definitely not struck on a cent planchet, because the devices would not be there at all.

I was just trying to get to the root of the op's question as it seemed a touch unclear
You are correct I would think as even if it is possible, and did happen, that if a sheet of 43 steel was used to cut 42 quarter planchets others from the sheet would have shown up by now

Hi,I actually put the post up here to get some info I was thinking of buying it,I just bought it a minute ago so it's on the way to me,what the heck it's only 20 bucks I think I can afford a 20 dollar loss.
When it gets here I'll weigh it and put up better pics.

I've purchased error coins from the guy before and all were correct to what he said they were so when he said a magnet picks it up I have no reason to think he's not accurate so I'll just have to wait and see,is it a 43 penny planchet, probably not,but might be a foreign planchet ?

Could it have been plated with something (mercury?) and is now peeling?

Could be mercury,I have to see when it comes,if it's silver oh well, throw it in the silver pile, but for 20 bucks if I didn't buy it it would probably bug me cause the guy has lots of coins and he's always been honest so when he said a magnet picks it up I didn't ask anything further.I don't ask the owners too many questions(as you guys all know) or they get thinking what us coin guys are thinking. The opposite is true also, lots of guys think cause it's a 150 year old coin it must be worth thousands and thousands of dollars, you'll never change their mind so no point trying too.
