Poll Question
Which Morgan would you rather have - an 1893-S in G4 or an 1880-CC in MS66? Both "book" at $2,250.

Poll Choices
 G4 1893-S
 MS66 1880-CC

The G4 1893-S is my choice.

I build albums and I would want to be able to put the coin in a Morgan dollar Dansco.

I would have no problem cracking out the G4 and filling the hole.

But cracking that expensive high grade one and putting it in a Dansco? I would never want to do that.

93s is a coin EVERY morgan collector dreams of. Especially those that cannot afford one. Get the 93s first and don't look back

Key dates are stupid expensive for what they are. Get something you would enjoy looking at.

100,000 of the 1893 S dollar were made. If you're gonna spend that kind of money, why not get an 1889 $3 Gold in AU-58 of which only 2,300 were made.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Key date coins are stupid for what they are (at least in the popular series; key dates of which only a few thousand were made and only a handful exist are more understandable), and the only good thing about them is that people will pay even stupider amount of money for the coin in the future.

I'm not really concerned about completing any set. So for me, I'd rather have a higher quality coin that I enjoy seeing, rather than a low grade rarity that I can only say "I have one".

I could not vote with out more information.

Both would be very good coins to own.

Most collectors want the coins they purchase to increase
in value. Even if they never plan on selling the coins.

It is very important to get the best price when buying
the coin.

So my suggestion would be, which ever of these two coins
I could get the best deal on.

----------------------------------------

For a personal decision. I have the 1880 CC hole filled
in my Dansco (not anywhere near MS66) and the 1893 S spot
is empty ... I am pretty sure I would go for the 1893 S.

It'd look good in my hole in my Morgan set.

Please, everyone, don't be overthinking this. It's certainly not an actual decison I'm faced with making, and the presumption should be that both coins are honestly described and priced the same. This hypothetical choice is presented to you solely to allow you to opine on competing philosophies of collecting.

Give me the '80-CC in 66.

Dropping that kind of dough on a G4 just does not sit right with me. When the time comes for me to buy a '93-S, I'm going to aim for an F15. One of my good friends actually has an OGH F12 CAC that is amazing, if he ever sells it, I will find the money to buy it. I would guess that would set me back around $5,000 today.

Lucky Cuss,

I was faced with this type of a decision about a year ago and it was real and not hypothetical. A year ago, I choose NOT to collect the 1893 S because of the overpriced cost, and I purchased PL and DMPL coins that I really enjoy. As my collection was getting near being a complete date and mint set without the 1993 S, I could not stand the thought of having a Morgan set except the 1893 S, so I did break down and purchased a 1893 S. Recently I purchased a choice 1899 O MS64 PL for $200 that I was more excited about getting than the 1893 S. I still have some buyer's remorse because of the amount that I paid for the 1893 S.

Close race.

I admit I'm somewhat surprised at that, and also how few of those who've viewed this thread actually voted, which I think make the results up to this point unreliable, statistically speaking.

I did set the the poll as open to everyone, not just members, though.
