Hello guys I have recently decided to start on a short set of Mercury dimes ... So I'm planing to do 1940-1945 p, d and s mints , I came across a 1940 merc graded by segs , I was able to get it for around 10 bucks it's only a MS64 coin but I had planed to do this set in MS64-66 so that it wouldn't be that expensive to complete .. Now I've seen these segs holders from time to time on ebay but I really don't know much about them ... Just so there isn't any confusion I'm not talking about the SGS that grades everything ms 70. I couldn't tell a lot about the coin as the sellers photos were pretty bad , so I'm wondering if anyone knows if this company is usually accurate with their grading ?

You can get that in PCGS / NGC plastic in the same grade for nearly the same price on ebay if you look around. Always buy the coin and not the slab. That being said, most collectors like their set to all be in the same grading service and PCGS and NGC are by far the most common and really the only market acceptable graders out there, at least as far as ebay is concerned. Here is a search for sold Mercury dimes on ebay in PCGS / NGC plastic that have sold for under $20 recently. Plenty of nice coins in this range. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Mercury-191...H_Complete=1

I've never submitted anything to SEGS but have examined a few of their coins and in my opinion..fairly accurate grading.

Thanks for the info guys but I'd just as soon have one in a basement slab than in a ngc holder as in my opinion and from what I've seen ngc isn't the greatest with the type of coins I collect .. Yeah I probably could have got an pcgs coin same grade and year for 3-5 bucks more but for every one that you can luck into for that price there are a dozen others selling in the 20 dollar range ... The past couple 1940 ms64 mercs that sold , one ngc 17.50 and a older anacs ms64 for 22 bucks .. It doesn't Bother me that my set will be in diffetent company's slabs .. I planed to use anacs , old pci , icg and maybe segs if I like this coin once I get it in hand ...

The coins I've purchased in SEGS slabs have all been fairly graded.

SEGS is a fine TPG service. I love the holders, what with their top read and durability. I've not seen them get surface scratches or scuff marks as readily as do the NGC and PCGS holders. They attend many smaller shows, in addition to the big ones. I often retrieve coins at their next show, saving the postage. Larry Briggs has written a number of books. I particularly like SEGS when it comes to pegging varieties and error coins.

SEGS is a solid grader, but they do have a tendency to be very honest when describing flaws, which has not endeared them to certain collectors and the larger dealers who depend on a bit of help from TPG's to get product moving.

That's for replying guys !! Well I believe for 10 bucks it's a good buy. A couple of you mentioned segs are great with varities , well I have a few varity coins I'd like to have graded .. I had planed to send them to anacs, I might consider giving segs a try .. Are they still in business and are their fees any more than anacs ? Will I need to join a membership to be able to submit ?
Thanks for the help everyone !

I like the Segs holder. I really like the fact that you can see what coin It is too without having to take the coin out of the bin. This one is a little generously graded. But pretty close.
