Question: I'm thinking of collecting a set of first series colorized bills. According to the wiki, the first series with the new design for the $100 was Series 2009. I've been browsing through ebay listings and all I can find are Series 2009A bills. Do the Series 2009 $100 notes exist, or are they rare? I remember from a couple of years ago that there was a problem with the new $100 bills, were they referring to the 2009 Series, and were they all recalled? Incidentally, why are some series numbers followed by the letters A, B, C? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

There have been series 2009 $100 bills printed, but not yet released. Currently, only series 2009-A $100 bills have been released. The A suffix was added to show that the bills were released 3 years late.

Oh Ok. Thanks! So, just to make sure, the first series of the colorized design to be released into circulation are as follows:
$5 - Series 2006 $10 - Series 2004A $20 - Series 2004 $50 - Series 2004 $100 - Series 2009A

So far as I know, they have not yet been released. These bills are awaiting re-inspection for printing errors, and at this point, it's not clear when (or if) they are released, even though the Rios-Geithner signatures claimed on the bills are outdated (Tim Geithner resigned in 2013).

I actually had a 2009 $100 bill from Minneapolis it was printed in May 2010. I accidentally spent it at the store the other day however.

They switch to the B suffix when all numbers from the A suffix have been printed, and so on.

This question; "Incidentally, why are some series numbers followed by the letters A, B, C?"
I think they are asking why some series change from 1988 to 1988A.
The series of the note does not necessarily represent the year it was printed. The series changes only when some change is made to the note design. Even then, if the change is considered a minor one, the series date will remain the same, with a letter added after it.

They can't be that rare. I just checked some bills I have around the house and 2 of them were 2009 non A series.

The 2009's started being distributed the first of the year. I do not believe they are rare......even the stars are readily available.
