$4900 for a VF25 1893S Morgan. This was about 3 or so years ago and am still underwater. Someday maybe I can break even! Have better success buying and selling large cents.

I think you will, Jerry, it was a market adjustment, not a permanent loss. Prices may not be as lofty as they were but silver and gold are gaining market strength again. Morgans are eternally popular and even more so for the Queen of Morgans. Just a matter of time, a few years or less, before it gets back up there.

Most likely, this 1841 cent, at circa $35 (exchange rate of the time): Not taking this out of the 2x2 anytime soon... so sorry for photo quality.

Morgan dollars will always be in high demand. I would start collecting some more myself if I didn't have the budget constraints of a 17 year old collector. I only have one at the moment. I'm sure you'll pull a profit soon enough.

That coinfrog doesn't muck around (I would love to see his entire banknote collection one day... )
£300 is the most I have spent on an individual coin... but then I don't collect American coins which seem to not only command the most money but are collected in such a way people end up desperate for the missing date.
Nice coins all ^^

I spent $3000 on a lot of currency. I only wanted 1 or 2 notes out of it and hopefully after selling/trading they'll end up being free with a little extra to stick aside for the next purchase. I was bidding on a lot of 20 Krugerrands at a local auction, I stopped bidding at $23,000. With 10% buyer premium and sales tax it just made no sense to keep bidding.

Thanks, DavidUK. Indeed, I would like to find a good way to show and discuss my notes, but as much as I love the CCF (indeed I do!), I don't think this is the right place. But you are right - among coin collectors over here, I think there is a strong "hole-filling" drive - I cerainly had it when I was younger, fueled by the temptation of ready-to-fill folders and albums.

Do you guys tend to buy over Internet or at a local dealer? I haven't really been collecting long enough to know the pros and cons of each.

I generally buy at coin shows. Quote: It was about the middle of last year, and it cost around 350. Good luck beating my next target though. Aha! My most expensive, purchased May 2nd at the age of 14, was $375 before the dealer gave me the $50 be-nice-to-young-collectors markdown. I love it when they do that.

The coin is an English silver groat (fourpence) of Edward III (1327-77), fourth coinage, pre-treaty, series E, struck 1354-55 at London. S. 1567. Sorry for the bad pics, I got lazy and used some from a while ago.

My most expensive coin was a 1971-S silver Eisenhower PR65CAM DDO FS-103. It was misattributed by PCGS. It has since been corrected by PCGS to an FS-106. I paid $305 for it, which would have been fine if it were indeed an FS-103. As such, I overpaid by $95. On the other hand, I did acquire a 2006-W $50 gold buffalo for the lofty price of $0.00.

Hopefully by next year I will have bought a really nice coin, but for now this is it:
