I am still going through a box of coins I have not looked at in decades. This coin was handed down to me from my family. I am posting it here because I think it came from circulation in the US. The main question I have is its size. This is a 1/2 Real Carolus III Spanish Colonial coin minted in Mexico City. Its diameter is 17 to 17.1 mm - depending on which axis is used to measure. The diameter is supposed to be 18 mm. It weighs 1.59 g. I am suspecting that it has been shaved for the silver...or is that difference within tolerance? Anyone know? What is a good resource website for these coins?

Hi, Very nice piece and your theory is very likely. Until 1857, all money from other countries had very close to one of the US denominations in silver or gold, and was legal tender for all transactions. Your piece probably traded for the equivalent of a US dime, maybe with a small discount.

After 1857 US law was changed and only US denominations were the coin of the realm. But do you think that coins that were recognizable as having silver or gold would just stop being used? Coin shortages during the US Civil War would have flushed many out from their stashes and yours could have been stored as great grandpa's civil war souvenir. :-)

Great website reference, Vermontesium...thank you! Would you happen to know a site discussing these Carolus III Reales? I have only found one which does not go into enough detail. I am especially interested in images of the various mint marks.

You might want to have them move this to the World Coins, there are quite a few experts on these particular coins there.

Welcome Pete2226 to the dark side (world coins)
As mentioned above, these coins circulated heavily in the US in the early years.
Mintmarks can all be seen in the Krause book "Spain, Portugal and the New World. If there is a specific mintmark you want to see let me know and I can post a picture.

Hey, the dark side is US coins - what you call "world coins" are much more varied :P ;)
