i have 2 Jefferson nickels where the rim is thicker on one side then the other. not in a MAD kind of way, but more like a tapered planchet. the rim is smooth all the way around, not like a railroad rim. have any of you found one like this or know what it is? I can post pics if needed, but I figured ill see if anyone knows what it is first.

the coin in question is in the center. notice how the edge is thick at 1 spot, then thin in another. it weighs the same as other nickels I've weighed, anywhere from 5.00 to 5.03 g. its a proof nickel so I don't know if that matters.

after inspecting it, the thick part seems to be because the rim is much higher than normal. maybe it is a Rim Fin? sorry for the picture mishap, it should be fixed now

Proof edges are taller than business strike coins. When you get a roll of proof cents, you will find about 48 instead of 51 that fits into a tube. Also the design makes the rim squared and thicker :

Thicknesses vary on coins, thickness can vary even on one coin. Like Coop said, the edges on proofs are vertically taller than those of business strikes.

Thats what I thought so that explains it then. The thin sharpe edges got beat and it litterally looks like finning folded over on that one area and thats the thin side while the intact side stayed taller like a normal proof coin . Sucks but still cool to find in the wild .

Exactly, Tweak. I posted a 85-S proof nickel a couple days ago. It popped out of a circulated roll and the edge was folded over.
