So I went into the bank yesterday to return some cents and nickels. I asked the teller if she could order me a box of half dollars, and she replied that she had ordered some for another guy once and they only came in boxes of $1000. I said that I thought they came in $500 boxes, but she seemed fairly certain. Has this happened to anyone else?

The only coins that come in $1000 bags are small dollars and Eisenhowers. Maybe she will order you Ike dollars!

Standard halves come in boxes of $500. Unless they are in a $1000 bag, which is very possible. I'd order them regardless.

If they only come in bags, I'll still get them. I would just have to transfer more money. If they have Ikes, though...

Don't be surprised if you order them and get $1000 boxes of small dollars. It's happened to me.

Maybe she was thinking about 1000 coins.

Banks and CUs in my area must order halves in $1K increments, so your bank contact may have been looking at a coin order sheet and thought the "$1,000 halves" meant the coins would come in a single $1K box. In reality they'll come in 2 boxes of $500 each.

Thank you, berto. I'll check with the bank. By the way, it's a Bank of America.

It's probably a $1k bag. I've had this happen twice. On both occasions I figured out I was the one that put the idea of "box" in their vocabulary. At certain banks, tellers know they can order in multiples of $1k. Most haven't actually ordered any. So when you ask for a $500 box, they tell you it's only available in $1000 box. When they show up, it's in a bag.

Well, whether it's a box or a bag, it's still half dollars. I'll see what I can find out.

Do banks frown upon this buy and return, or do you take to another bank to cash in? Please email me, for I don't often come to this particular page. *** Private information removed by Staff. Please do not post your address/email/phone number etc. ***

Quote: Do banks frown upon this buy and return, or do you take to another bank to cash in? Buying and returning is frowned upon. 1) You will probably get your own coins back if you don't find a way to get them out of the circulation of your pickup banks. 2) Imagine someone wants to special order something, makes you lift heavy things, then brings it back and expects you to return it, all without making a profit. You will get some frustrated people who will NOT order for you anymore, and possibly other CRHers in the area. Pick up one place, dump somewhere else. Preferably a place that uses a different coin service.

So far I have been buying and dumping at the same bank, although I know I should find a dump bank. The problem is there aren't a lot of banks in my area. So far the tellers have been willing to do it for me, and I do have an account with the bank, but I don't want to be that guy who makes them do a ton of extra work for my own benefit. I'm going to try and find a dump bank before they get too annoyed.

Curious, are they nice enough to not give you back the same box of coins the next time you go in?

So far I haven't asked for the same quantity as I brought back.

Ah. Well, as long as all parties are happy and you are not recycling your searches, I see no problem. Keep on keeping on.
