Well, I don't get out very often. But tomorrow morning my ride gets here and we take a 7 hour trip to Springfield, OH for the "Mid-OH" insulator swap meet/show.

I am looking forward to spending time with some of my best friends. I plan to return home Sunday. This is longest running insulator show 45 years!

I met CCF family members Buddy and Kevin at the National Insulator show last summer...maybe someone lives near the Clark County Fairgrounds in Springfield, OH from CCF that would want to come over? I think admission is 3.00 or less (?).

http://www.insulators.info/shows/springfield/

If you do come, just ask for Lee Brewer. Just about anyone can point me out to you. I likely will also be the only one there with an elk antler for a walking cane.

I would love to meet another CCF family member F2F.

Have fun with your weird glass cylinder thingies. We'll be here having fun with our weird metal circles.

I do hope you have fun. Those things look interesting/fun to learn about.

My ride is due in a few minutes - what better way to spend it than on CCF?

@harmonica... not sure what a Wade of England is b/c I don;t collect foreign insualtors (I keep telling myself and the 50 or so I have don't count). The only Brit pieces I have are Bullers Co But I do have a good collector friend in Great Britiain who would likely know and point you in the right direction. PM me and I can forward you his email if you like (I won't get your PM until next week when I return from the show though). I would not doubt collectors over here have them also though, so if you give me more info, I can ask around and likely find one -- or at least direct you to one.

Thanks for this. A plus of insulator shows though is that there are quite a few coin collectors also. There are not usually a lot of coins for sale though.

And one of the main reasons I think these pieces of glass also draw coin collectors (besides looking amazing with morning sunlight coming through them when on the windowsill) is the historic aspect. They held the wires that provided for telepgraph, telephone, and electric power to be transmitted. This pute them pre-civil war era to the glass being phased out in the 60s (you can still see some in use at times though).
I just think of the messages that went through the wire they were holding and, like wishing our coins could talk, wish the glass could relate its messages.

I have a couple pieces that were in use when Lincoln was assassinated - I am sure the news traveled through its wire. Likewise the end of the Civil War, Garfield and McKinley assassinations, the turn of the century to 1900, Queen Victoria and the other English monarch reigns, WWI news, WWII news, JFK assassination, and all other major history events up through the fist moon walk etc. was transmitted through the wires of others I have. If you ever get serious, I can also get you an address where anyone 16 and under can send for a free box (you pay shipping) of some nice pieces to start out. No strings except you pay postage. These are nicer pieces donated by people in the insulator hobby to help out newbies. And if I am not mistaken, they make sure to include a purple one. That covers the postage right there as the least expensive purple is normally 25.00. The rest of the pieces are normally not dirt common pieces either. PM me if you want to know more.

Well - I'm off!

Interesting. I'm not too far from Springfield. I may have to check it out in years ahead. I only have a have dozen or so very common insulators, some of them coming from an abandoned trolley car right-of way-that was in my backyard growing up. I've never really collected them but find them interesting.
Rest in Peace

I got back the other day. Been a few days recovering from the trip. I only bought one insulator - more later. But I also brought home...COINS (and some interesting ones I will be selling as they will help out a friend who needs the money)

More to come when I get pics, but my camera is acting up again.

Missed you Buddy!

Earle42, I believe you when you say you don't get out much.

Insulators! Bah, I've got a small collection of them 'cause they don't sell at yard sales. You buy at storage wars, keep what you want, sell the rest, and you have insulators left over. Also National Geographics.

Just joshing you, Earle42. A trainspotter makes an insulator collector completely understandable. (Had to be careful with that one, other endings - ers - ing - brought up items to which I was definitely not referring)

Seriously, I'm interested in what you bought and, maybe, the coins. Did you get a chance to tour the Simpson house?

@parklane - no touring except the insulator showroom floor. It really is like a very large family reunion so not a dull moment goes by where you are not saying hi to some old friend. And Thurs-Sunday was not enough time to see everyone.

Sorry I forgot about the pics for this thread!
I actually posted some of the pics in other places for opinions on grading etc. of the coins:
The coins ended up being a 1907 Newfie half dollar, an 1864 Masonic Penny (thanks to CCF for identifying this for me), a 1928-D SLQ, about a dozen common date IHCs, 1920, and 1929 Canadian cents, and ... surprisingly, an 1872 Half Dime!

Since this pic was taken I put the Half Dime in acetone and let it sit about 3 days. Now a lot of the black to the right of Liberty is gone. The left band of black is still there.

The only insulator I bought was one made by my favorite insulator manufacturer, Brookfield. I bought it b/c I specialize in this specific type of insulator and have never seen it in an apple green color (reminiscent of a Depression Green in the right lighting) before - and neither had the person I got it from who was doing some major downsizing. This specific person is well known in the hobby and has been a specialist in this style since the 60s.

Insulator value is based on color, name of manufacturer, and profile of the insulator (each profile is given a CD or Consolidated Design number that can be looked up to identify which insulator a person has).

Only b/c people ignored Brookfield for so long can I be privileged to own something this rare. And since the hobby is just now really starting to look more seriously at Brookfield - most would not know how rare this item is and the selling price reflects this...20.00!

Give it a few years and this one will be more recognized for what it is. That's two different insulators of this rarity gotten at the last two shows attended - the last few months have been good!

Thanks Buddy - it really sparkles in sunlight

I won't go into details here, but its unusual color allows me to trace it to being made (very likely) in the 1906-1907 working year. The fun is then looking at history in 1908 to see what news was likely sent through the wire it held. Like our coins, If only it could talk!
