This coin is in a heavy Lucite holder as if it were of some importance. However, it seems a pretty common date. The collection I inherited is heavy on error coins so I thought maybe it has some interest that way? I can't see anything unusual except may the striated coloring?

The obverse discoloration is probably due to toning from the holder or the way it was stored. The reverse shows some nice "ghosting". We would have to see closer photos to tell much more.
Rest in Peace

As has been mentioned, the ghosting on the reverse appears to be Progressive Indirect Design Transfer. Nice coin!

Flip the reverse upside down, Dcnw. You'll see Lincoln's outline like this one. Nice coin.

Thanks, it's short name is "Ghosting". It's caused by dies receiving each other's design from too many repeated strikes, (transferred through the coins they struck).

Could the striations be caused by an improper alloy mix?

I see that, but I'm talking about the lines of different colored metal on the obverse.

No I don't think so, Numisma. They are a result of toning, probably by environment. Striations caused by an improper alloy mix produce Woodies.

Ghosting also known as Internal Metal Displacement or Progressive Indirect Design Transfer.
