Why is there pink color to this dime I found   |

most likely it was painted or colored with a marker. And the color has worn away from the higher sections of the coin.  |

I read somewhere that mercury sometimes turns pink when a coin is being made is there any truth to that?

Mercury dimes are a reference to the image on silver dimes made from 1916 to 1945. Click on the link for Mercury dimes and you will be taken to a page explaining them.

Well this isn't a Mercury dime, its a Roosevelt dime so mercury turning pink is irrelevant here. Winged Liberty Dimes are also known as Mercury dimes because the portrait resembles Mercury who was the messenger of the roman gods, oh, and male. A friend of mine's father used to own an arcade and had red sharpie on the coins he used to give to family members for the machines to keep track of free play on the machines.

Mine is also pink. I've seen these before and thought they were painted and threw them back into the pile. I see there are other posts about this as well. I wonder what this is?   |

An acetone-soaked Q-tip will tell you quickly if that was a marker...

It is definitely painted but I think the question is...
'Why are we finding random pink coins?' I see posts for nickels dimes and quarters. No one has a real idea of what they are.

No one has a real idea of what they are Most every on this forum knows what they are. Take any color sharpie and color a coin then try to wipe it off after it dries. You end up with a coin that looks like the OP's coin and your coin. It's nothing more than environment damage |
