I like! Of course I have to say that, I'm a SeatedNut. That's a nice XF-40 example of that one-year type (arrows and rays). 90% of these have seen some type of cleaning in the past. If this one has, it retoned very nicely.

Yes, that's a wicked nice-looking coin! The little obverse hairlines make me think 'old cleaning' too but it has a really nice solid look due to the even toning in the fields and recessed areas. Do I see a little scratch across the reverse shield and/or a die crack developing across the eagle's wing?

Either way, I'd agree that if it were problem-free it would be an XF--a VF net grade still makes this one nice pick up--good job!

My opinion is VF-30. The BER is a little worn or weakly struck and the vertical shield lines are not complete.

Nice Seated Half. I am really wanting to find one in similar condition to this for my 7070.

I'm still trying to figure these out, but I'm thinking VF30 on this one. The eagle's feathers don't seem to have enough detail to justify XF. Then again, I respect the opinions of SeatedNut & halfabustisbetter on these. Maybe one of them could elaborate on why they think it's an XF? I do think it's a good looking coin, one I'd be proud to have myself.

The dealer put it up for greysheet XF but I paid in between VF and XF money. It was one of the nicest 1853 at the show.

I agree with those giving a VF assessment, as that was/is my net grade. The genesis of my XF details call was my delight over the general eye appeal and my vision of how the coin would appear if it did not have to be net-graded (those pesky 'details'). I made the judgment that some of the apparent wear was due to a series of gentle rubdowns rather than mere circulation due to the overall and somewhat incongruous appearance of contrast between the high points and the recessed areas/fields.

I don't believe that a professional grader would take the step that I took to imagine or visualize something that is no longer there, but that is what I based my view on. I'm certain that "XF" would not appear on the slab if this coin were ever to be encapsulated; in this case I must admit I allowed my heart to elevate the coin a notch in my esteem.

Nice coin. And very nice pictures, by the way. 1/30 sec and f/2.8...you did very well getting it all in focus with nice detail.
