Are there certain years of coins you hoard for any particular reason? I am thinking about doing this just because.

I hoard 1938-D Buffalo nickels. I like them because they were the last of the Buffalos, they usually come in higher grades and they are reasonable in price. I can get them in the junk buckets at most shops for anywhere between 40 and 60 cents each.

Last count I have somewhere around 6000 of them. I do a lot of stupid stuff.

I don't have any year I hoard, but I have always fantasized about being wealthy enough to buy up every coin in a small mintage year/variety to drive up the price crazy high and then drip them back in slowly. But that is just fun thinking, not because I like any particular year or variety.

@crazyglue, I remember a Scrooge McDuck/Donald Duck comic from ages ago where Scrooge McDuck did that exact thing to unique-ify a coin. I think he bought them all up and dumped them in the ocean. Then lost the one he was keeping. Ah, Disney hijinks.

Me too. And that's just what I think is stupid. Ask my wife and stupid is likely to quadruple.

The only yearly-type thing I can think of is I've "hoarded" 1 tube each of all the Westward Journey nickels (P&D) in good condition. Same for the '09 cents.

Otherwise I hoard all the junk silver I can afford.

Wow, I thought I was the only one that imagined that! If I had a few too many millions to spend I have imagined just how crazy it would be to buy up all the available 1950-D nickels on the market and see what happens to the price. With a mintage of only 1.6 million, I think it would be remarkably feasible. In fact, saying that out loud makes me think it may be a tad bit undervalued.

westernsky- I haven't seen that one, or I forgot about it and I am subconsciously thinking about it. That is pretty cool.

Derek- I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I hoard all kinds of currency. I dont know why or when but it started with wheat cents, andnow I have many world coins, bills, and lots of jingle change separated by amount and general dates (new or older).

I am a noob at this numistic stuff.
Rest in Peace

I've not yet met an 1892 Barber dime I can get for under $3 that hasn't come home with/to me regardless of shape and any G4 or better problem free I can find for under $4. I Only have about 15 of them so far. Why do I hoard them?
They are the most abundant inexpensive early date Barber dime I see. I like that it's a first year of issue.
I've given a few away to coworkers who liked old coins too. I don't know what surprises them more. The date and how old the coin is when they first see it or when I tell them it's only worth about $5. Of course I'm extremely careful of what I say and never share details of my collection with them.
I used to hoard the 09 cents I found but I've lost interest in adding more. Same with the 4 special different design Jefferson nickels. Gave up on them quickly except for the buffalo one.

Since I was a kid I have kept every 76 quarter that I came across. I did have to spend a few here and there when I was short on money, mostly as a kid, or in college but I would say I have 200 or so now. Actually added two this week to the jar.

I like the 1950 Mexican 5P Railroads along with the Texas Centennial Halfs. Just can't seem to get enough of those coins with "busy" designs!

I like this thread! I hoard Jefferson nickels, any year but I'm filling a Whitman 1938-1961 folder at the moment, so I coin roll hunt for the right years/mints anyway. My wife thinks I'm crazy...hoarding silver coins too, but she likes them.

Back in the mid 1960s, I hoarded any silver coin that came my way. I ended up with about 300 1964 Washington quarters, all of which I still have in my hoard.

I wouldn't call it hording but I have put together four 1944 years sets that is my birth year and my favorite is the certified S mint set.

Other than that I often start sets for no good reason other than my compulsive nature like my set of England coins that ended up being a large collection that took 3 years in the making. It is a type set of their coins dating back to the 1800's.
