You can see the same effect to a somewhat lesser degree on quite a few of the 1949 dies. The rim on the Obverses seems to be narrower than the rim on the Reverses... are the Obverse dies wider?
As DEVLEC speculates then a little bit of die misalignment could cause the it.
I harsh sunlight blast does pick up and magnify all contacts..and frosting etc. It was in a bag that traveled around bumping along and dumped on a floor and sorted through to finally get to a cashiers till.. That's why so many bigger coins have those big bag marks..
It is beautiful when held in hand and ICCS's as a 63. way back when.. ...and it does look a lot like the earlier first pics when in hand.
