Picked up this little lot of US coins. The two quarters are both types that are new to my collection and I am not familiar enough to grade them.

I figured the walking half was VF20 or thereabouts and the other two I don't really know as I am unfamiliar with the type...

The lot cost me £18, was it good value or a stinker?

I haven't received the coins yet so I am using the sellers photo's... they say copyright but presumably it is OK to post them under "fair use and educational purposes"

1941 - $7-8 USD
1926 - $3 USD
1862 - $20 USD

Not bad for $27

Seems I got the right result for the wrong reasons, I expected the 1941 to be $17.50, and the others not as much because they aren't in great shape.

I seldom see the older US coins over here so I haven't got much experience of them but I was thinking about possibly assembling a 7070 collection. Not sure I could complete it though because there are a couple of difficult ones I am not likely to be able to find/afford in acceptable condition.

Glad these look OK though :)

As I see it most of the value here is in the 1862 Seated quarter. I put it at about F-15 details, cleaned. Numismedia has F-12 at $36 so I'd value your quarter at about $20-25.

The Standing Liberty Half I'd value at $10 since its in decent circulated condition and the Standing Liberty quarter I'd value at $5.

Great pickups at a god price.
The SLQs were used heavily ,and the design was a poor one for durability. Most found in circulation had no date left on them. My grandfather started me in coin collecting in the late 60s. Although b/c of his business, in the late 60s through late 70s I went through a lot of change, I never found an SLQ in circulation -- in any condition.
Back then I even found some Barber coins - but not an SLQ.

The 1942 WLH is a common date for that series. And although you would have to go through a lot of halves, some people on the JFK roll hunting thread have found some of the more common date WLHs like this one within the last couple years.

The Seated quarter is actually a nice specimen for a type coin. I may be wrong, but even well worn specimens of these tend to be sold by their date and usually are not "junk silver." In fact I don't even know if I have one that looks that nice yet. I think the few I have have the rims worn on them.

I agree that this wasn't a bad deal. I assume you were going off the Red Book value for the WLH ($17.50 in VF-20), but keep in mind that these values are often inflated and the price of silver has dropped since the latest edition was published. I also agree that the Seated quarter is the best value.

For reference: £18 GBP = $27.29 USD
