So I just noticed this section today and think it's a fantastic idea. What a great way of building a resource... One suggestion should we also include seller names in the post. A seller that knowingly sells fakes may sell more in the future. A good way to keep a list of nefarious sellers might be good.

I agree AgCoinAu, any tools we have to help collectors identify these fakes is a huge help to our hobby. Thanks CCF!

I like the new forum section as well for tackling counterfeits. Although I agree there are nefarious sellers out there, there are also sellers who may innocently not know that a coin they may be selling is counterfeit; so on that point, I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, and I think we can do that by giving them an opportunity to remove the listing/issue refund once it is brought to their attention that the item they are selling is (conclusively proven) to be a counterfeit item. Secondly, with respect to the objective of the new CCF counterfeit section, I'd suggest it not be limited to ebay listings, as people are finding new ways of facilitating numismatic sales. Just my 2 (discontinued) cents.

ebay is the only place I have pull, so only post ebay please. All posting others accomplishes is showing people where to buy them.

I disagree with your latter comment. Revealing other marketplaces that have counterfeit items as a means of broader CCF-member awareness is arguably part of the point in having this section in the first place.

Nope, about 100K pairs of unique eyeballs peruse this forum every day, including criminal eyeballs. Heck, we've had Chinese counterfeiters post their coins here posing as collectors so WE can tell them what's wrong with their work. We're not going to broadcast where to buy counterfeits, not with the exposure we get here. All that serves to do is help shysters, and maybe create new ones if the timing is right. I have no problem with posting images of counterfeits, but absolutely not links to where they can be bought for pennies.

Perhaps we're talking about 2 different things. I'm not talking about counterfeit suppliers. I'm talking about people selling coins that are listed as legit (maliciously/innocently), but really aren't. I've come across stuff like that on occasion from auctioneers using iCollector.com; which, as I'm sure you know, many other respectable coin dealers/auctioneers use, and subsequently, collectors buy from.

As an aside, if we have that many unique eyes watching our CCF, why not lock out guest browsing and force visitors to register for free?

Because that's not what we're about. We're here to share with other collectors not keep secrets. Besides criminals know how to register. The new forum was created to report ebay counterfeits, that's all its for. After a few days the topics will be locked and moved to the correct forum.

Then that makes the 100k unique visitor comment a pretty hollow argument to restrict this section to ebay listings only. Counterfeit listings exist well beyond the cyberwalls of ebay.

ebay is still the largest marketplace it's a big step in the right direction since the RCM doesn't seem to care.

If you don't like the forum, or what I'm doing to get listings taken down, don't use it. See if I care.

What I don't like is your attitude toward any constructive suggestion about something that benefits the members of this forum. It's not just about getting ebay listings taken down, because you'll never get them ALL taken down. Sometimes, all we can do is warn others of known fake listings, you know, in the spirit of sharing information and not keeping secrets, etc.

Quote:It's not just about getting ebay listings taken down, You don't seem to get it. That's EXACTLY what these forums were created for because that's what I can fix. Usually within minutes. Instead of whining, how about you spend 30 hours a week of your time, with no compensation, and get us an inside person at one of these other sites so we can get something done on those too. I'll gladly allow them posted here then.
