Found this in a jar of wheat cents...a 1942-S with what looks to be Machine Doubling on the date and mint mark. Check the east (right) side of 9, 4, and 2; and the mint mark. Doubling shows a bit better at an angle.

Hi I hope you all won't mind a "stupid" question from a newbie. But why isn't an MD coin any extra value from other Mint errors. Aren't the MD's part of the Mint process and therefore a mint error? Or is the point of extra value "Mint" errors that are less common.

I have a nice 1955 S Wheat Cent(which I have kept because it is beautiful). I just got a new magnifier that works with my computer so now I am going through all the coins I have been collecting to see them in more detail. I have some really crazy looking coins (some of which are PMD but they look cool)

I noticed on this cent there seems to be something going on with the "S" Mint mark, but not sure what it is. The coin is in VF condition so any info is appreciated.

I posted this in another section CCF but only got 1 response so I think I have my post in the wrong section. I have uploaded some pics the first 3 are just the mint mark but I put up some extra's so you can see the quality of my coin in total.

I am learning and reading a ton of stuff on coin collecting and variety errors and what I really learn from the most is the people here on CCF website - there are so many parts to it and I am still learning how to use the website and apply to my coins so I don't bother you all so much with questions on my coins. There is only so much time in a day though.

Thank you very much
Sandy

Why is sand not as valuable as gold? Sand is more common. On machine damaged examples this happens a lot. A very large percentage of these are from normal dies, but it happens on doubled dies as well. So it is a common to find these on raised devices and incuse devices. Variety collectors view them as a damaged coin. Some collect these, but set them aside in a roll and set a doubled die coins in a different roll, then soon you will see how common they are. Some sell them, but I won't because I know what they are.
