Ok, so not that I haven't spent enough on U.S. Mint products this year already, but hearing that the Platinum 1 oz. coin sold out in 7 minutes and checking PM spot prices got me to thinking. With low spot prices it seems like a good time to take advantage, so what else should I consider? We know the U.S. Mint changes prices of gold offerings with the spot price of gold frequently, and silver not so much. And I've been thinking about the gold U.S. Marshal coin (proof) for months now... really like that design. But I also collect the 5 oz ATB pucks. Let's compare:

(And yes I know that these coins are numismatic in nature, not stackers.)

U.S. Marshals Gold Proof
Price as of this post: $369.00
Spot price of Au as of this post: $1061.80
US Marshal Au coin is ~0.265 oz of Au
21.5% premium over spot

2015 1 oz AGE
Price as of this post: $1410.00
Spot price of Au as of this post: $1061.80
AGE coin is ~1 oz
25% premium over spot

Any available 2015 ATB Silver 5 oz. Puck
Price as of this post: $149.95
Spot price of Ag as of this post: $14.10
ATB puck is 5 oz
53% premium over spot

If you didn't already know it, ASEs are even worse:

2015 ASE Proof
Price as of this post: $48.95
Spot price of Ag as of this post: $14.10
ASE is 1 oz
71% premium over spot

Yikes.

So, again, I know there are numismatic concerns so we're not comparing apples to apples and many of us (myself included) don't give a rat's hindquarters (proactive profanity filter there) about resale. BUT, it seems that if you wanted to protect your investment against a crash in the numismatic market and help any future family members that may wish to part with your investment, you might want to go with gold over silver.

It just requires a much bigger commitment.

I feel like I've done this lesson before. And no matter how many times I do it for myself, I never learn. I'll still buy the silly P and UNC ASEs. This is not meant to deter anyone from buying U.S. Mint products, just to provide some data for people to make informed decisions, or, as I do, let my heart overrule my brain.

@Mods - not sure this is in the correct forum. Please relocate if needed.

Personally, I find it interesting how I can buy old coins for less than their numismatic value and sometimes even below their bullion value, for this reason I stay away from anything but an amazing deal on NCLT

Nice post Celtic.

I have the same sentiments as you expressed. I like the recent 5 oz ATB P coins with the birds on them.

However, with silver prices sliding and no end in sight for the downtrend, I just cannot bring myself to buying any more pucks until the Mint adjusts those prices.

I am ALL for making a profit and the Mint SHOULD make a profit. However, this huge wide disconnect between spot prices and their mark up is a turn off and I am not going to budge until the Mint adjusts things.

Its a shame too because I bought one puck, the Everglades coin and its a beauty, I love how the birds turned out. However, I cant stomach doing this again and I will not. Same with gold, I would love to add an uncirculated 1 oz gold american eagle.. but forget it..

Buy the bullion pucks preferably at pre-sale prices. Some issues resell for a decent profit....and you still have the bullion component.

They have morphed into a numismatic product because of the limited mintage
