Interesting marks, they seem to follow the contour of the face. Almost like it was scrapped along an angle with some kind of stick.

A stiff, quick brush mark reveals a wicked profile! On purpose? I don't know.

I'm still on the fence, its the way I found it, and appears quite fresh except for the area in question. Looking at it in hand it seems impossible to create..not by me anyway. And there is not enough scratching on the face to even out all the marks in the field...hhmmm.. Thanks for the replies

Very artistic, since it only cost 25c I'd hang onto it as an interest piece.
Probably some art student looking for a passing grade, specializing in unusual mediums. The creative use of coins and paper money have been a longstanding favorite.....

looks almost like a residue rather than scratches. I'm looking at the lines that run vertical rather than horizontal and it looks like they've "cleaned" some of the lines. also, if the object were blunt, say like a soapstone, it would leave that gap from the edge

I was wondering if the planchet might have had some damage prior to strike thus the fine shadow line in front of the queens face separating the scratches...just a guess.
PurelyW - No it was change from the store.

The nose is higher and the marks in the field are further away and the same goes for the lips. Higher departure points on the face leaves for more distance away from the face in those scrtaches. Now..near the bottom of the nostril, the scratches are a lot closer and that would be expected if drawing something across the face and towards the field. PMD is my guess here..

Probably PMD, I tried to recreate it but all that did was scratch up over a dozen quarters.

The strokes radiate from a point near the center of the coin. Notice how the shadow of the lips is lower than the shadow from the nose. I agree with the art project idea, like with a stiff wire or tool of some kind. Shows talent. Maybe this was a practice coin.
