The dealer was selling this as a 'die crack' but it doesn't look like a typical die crack to me. I was wondering if it was some sort of lamination error or split/cracked planchet. Maybe it is just damaged. But I was curious about it because of the way the portrait's neck shows up but the last number in the date is covered.

I looked at your post yesterday and was left scratching my head trying to figure out an answer.

The reverse showing the split reminded me of this Peace dollar https://goccf.com/t/228472 the obverse looks my rookie eye to be a retained lamination http://www.error-ref.com/retained-lamination/

I am far from knowledgeable on errors so hopefully others will chime in. -MV

Thanks for the answers.

It's been a challenge trying to find anything like it.

I saw this 'Lamination Fold Over Before Strike' and thought it was similar. ww.error-ref.com/lamination_fold-over_before_strike/ It isn't, of course, exactly the same -- so I have my doubts.

Anyway, there is a crack but it isn't a die crack like the dealer said. I just thought it was interesting. It's pretty worn so we may never know for sure.

I kept thinking that it was a some sort of lamination error because it looks like the 7 is somewhat covered by extraneous metal. But now I think that the 7 is just worn away -- the part that remains was perhaps protected a bit by the crack.

I appreciate the input. The illusion of the 7 being complete but under metal had me on the wrong track.

I believe that this is a cracked planchet, I have a quarter that shows similar characteristics which I had posted about previously - although no consensus was reached on that earlier post.
